Giuliani: Briefing may prompt calls to end Russia probe

President Donald Trump is increasing the pressure on the Justice Department, declining to say whether he has confidence in Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after the White House negotiated rare access to classified documents for Trump's congressional allies.

"They can't indict Trump": Giuliani says Mueller "understands" he can't charge sitting president Special counsel Robert Mueller has acknowledged to President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani that a sitting president can't be indicted under current rules, meaning that the year-long Russian Federation probe is unlikely to unseat Trump.

The first briefing was held with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan; the GOP chairs of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes of California, and the House Oversight Committee, South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy; and the respective committees' top Democrats, Rep. Adam Schiff of California and Virginia Sen. Early Wednesday morning, the president said that "SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!" White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who brokered the meetings, will participate by getting them started, but will not stay, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department will host two classified briefings Thursday. And the White House said Kelly would organize the meeting with House lawmakers to discuss the documents.

Here to lend a hand, Michael Barone provides understated and much needed historical perspective to his media colleagues: "Until 2016, just about everyone agreed that it was a bad thing for government intelligence or law enforcement agencies to spy (er, secretly collect information?) on a political campaign".

U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands during a roundtable event on immigration policy at Morrelly Homeland Security Center, Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in Bethpage, N.Y.

The White House now says it is working to facilitate a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to review classified documents on the Russian Federation investigation this week, instead of after the Memorial Day recess, as promised earlier.

Clapper said Wednesday on ABC's "The View" that the president should welcome the use of an informant who gathered information about his campaign's Russian Federation contacts, since the objective was to gather intelligence about Moscow's nefarious plans.

Democrats condemned the Republicans-only meeting and the appearance of Flood at both briefings.

"Inherent in the committee's work is the responsibility to ask tough questions of the executive branch", Ryan said.

The former director added that he could not find it possible that his former employer planted an informant, adding: "I know it not to be true".

"Well I'd actually say, how is he going to explain to his grandchildren all of the lies, the deceit, all of the problems he has caused for this country".

"If the spying was inappropriate, that means we may have an entirely illegitimate investigation", Giuliani said of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

The New York Times reported deep in a May 17 story that the Federal Bureau of Investigation placed an "informant" inside Trump's campaign who "met several times with Mr. [Carter] Page and [George] Papadopoulos", two of Trump's former low-level campaign advisers.

The IG is expanding the existing investigation into the Russian Federation collusion probe by examining whether there was improper, politically motivated surveillance of a Republican candidate by the Obama-led Justice Department.
