  • Harvey Weinstein Pleads Not Guilty to Rape in New York

Once the most powerful man in Hollywood, disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein surrendered himself to NY police Friday morning, a watershed moment for the Me Too movement catalyzed last fall by the countless women who came forward with sexual harassment and assault allegations against him. He was then arraigned on the charges of first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree.

Actress Rose McGowan, who accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, applauded the arrest of the Hollywood media mogul in NY on Friday. Allegations from dozens of women against the once-powerhouse producer catalyzed what became known as the #MeToo movement, a national reckoning about sexual misconduct.

Court documents charge that one woman, believed to be Lucia Evans, an aspiring actress who was forced to perform oral sex on Weinstein during a meeting at the company's Greenwich Street offices in 2004.

Mr Weinstein appeared pale and stood next to Mr Brafman while prosecutors described a bail agreement.

A large crowd gathered to wait for Weinstein's arrival at the NYPD to turn himself in, and waited outside until after his court appearance.

Brafman told reporters outside the courthouse that he would move to dismiss the charges against his client.

In a statement published by the Hollywood Reporter, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said that Friday's charges, "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", adding, "I thank the fearless survivors who have come forward, and my office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation".

The indictment handed down Friday accuses Weinstein of sexual assaults on two women -one in 2004 and another in 2013.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, said she was "shocked".

Police in California and London are also investigating Weinstein for possible wrongdoing.

Weinstein faces rape and criminal sex act charges. Among those who have spoken out against the former mogul is actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who accused Weinstein of acting inappropriately towards her back in 1995 when she was only 22-years-old.

"At a certain point, you have to think about the greater good of humanity, of womankind", she said.

After Harvey Weinstein surrendered to authorities in NY on Friday, Rose McGowan spoke out about the disgraced producer on NBC News' Megyn Kelly Today. The number increased further in another investigation by Ronan Farrow for the New Yorker. "The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice". "Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong".

In a statement, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance called the women who pressed charges "brave" and referred to the investigation into Weinstein's behavior "ongoing". The rape charge stems from an allegation by a woman who has not been publicly identified.

"Your honor, the defendant is before the court charged with two violent B felonies for two separate violent sexual assaults against two women", said top Manhattan prosecutor Joan Illuzzi.
