Hawaii volcano pumps out 'vog' along with lava, ash

  • Infrared images reveal damage on Hawaii's Big Island

A fresh blast from the crater of Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano has sent an ash plume more than four kilometres into the sky.

FEMA's David Mace says the lava breached the property overnight and is within 200 metres of one of the capped wells, Nine News reports. He said there was no indication of the release of the poisonous gas hydrogen sulfide, the greatest fear should lava hit the wells.

The Hawaii Civil Defence Agency said lava from Kilauea has covered a potentially explosive well at a geothermal power station and is threatening another, after flowing onto the site.

More residents in some sections of the Leilani Estates neighbourhood were ordered to immediately evacuate shortly before 8 p.m. Both wells were closed and secured in anticipation of the lava flow.

NASA said the image couldn't be acquired until clouds cleared from the area just enough to see the lava.

The lava flow has destroyed more than 80 structures, up from 50 earlier in the week and authorities expect that number to rise.

"Several residents were evacuated in advance of the risky and fast-moving flows", the HVO said.

An incredible timelapse video has emerged showing lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano invading a backyard as it now enters its fourth week of destructive eruptions. "Primary concern is sulfur dioxide from the eruption and lava coming on site".

The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory described the eruption from the East Rift Zone as "vigorous".

Light winds are expected to push volcanic gases westward, increasing the presence of ash and sulfur dioxide downwind of the Kilauea summit, the National Weather Service said on Monday.

Lava-filled fissures have opened up across the southeastern side of the Big Island over the past three weeks as the Kilaeau volcano has become more active.
