Ireland's Very First Ball In Test Cricket Was A Dramatic One

12 May, 2018, 20:45 | Author: Sylvester Abbott
  • Deutrom revealed the capacity for the match is 6,300 – it will be 8,500 for the T20s against India next month with further temporary stands erected

The tall pacer had played a sole Test for England before switching his allegiance to the Irish.

Merrion all-rounder Kane was quickly to his feet, but Imam, a nephew of Inzaman-ul-Haq - a man not known for his running between the wickets - required lengthy treatment after injuring his neck in the collision.

But the 22-year-old left-hander, who hit a hundred on his one-day worldwide debut against Sri Lanka last year, has made fifties against both Kent and Northamptonshire in Pakistan's two warm-up matches ahead of this one-off Test.

The left-hander, who came into this match following fifties in Pakistan's two warm-up fixtures, against Kent and Northamptonshire, square-drove Murtagh for a stylish four.

Malahide witnessed a moment of history on Saturday as Boyd Rankin took Ireland's first wicket in Test cricket, dismissing Azhar Ali.

Sohail (31) fell to a stunning low catch from Porterfield that gave Thompson his first Test wicket and left Pakistan 71 for 3.

Imam was leg before wicket for seven to a Murtagh delivery that came back into him. Cuts and edges fetched them the required runs and helped the visitors reach 67 for 2 at Lunch, with the third wicket-stand remaining undefeated on 54.

Pakistan would have expected more from Babar Azam (14) who couldn't hang on with Shafiq for longer than nine overs before nicking off to Murtagh.

The 33-year-old started excellently with the ball as Pakistan's openers were put through a testing period.

Shafiq went on to complete a 107-ball fifty when he pulled Rankin for a single.

Rankin and Thompson removed Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed respectively before Ashraf and Khan steered Pakistan to the close.

The day started eventfully enough with Debutant Imam-ul-Haq almost managing to run himself out off the first Irish ball in Test cricket. Rules of the game are also changed as both teams can impose follow-on if the lead is 150 runs or more.

After 141 years of wait, Ireland became the 11th nation in the world to play Test cricket on Saturday as a village ground played host to a Test match in front of a near-capacity crowd.

And on the nine previous occasions only Zimbabwe have managed that and, apart from the first Test when Australia beat England, are the only side to avoid losing their inaugural Test.
