Millions of Muslims prepare for start of fasting in Ramzan

Saudi moon observers said that there was no sight of Ramazan crescent Tuesday. The moon-sighting committee is still in meeting and an official announcement is being awaited by them.

It is a time where Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset, and in the USA that is approximately 16 hours of no food and water every day for a month.

Last minute preparations are underway as Muslims around the world stock up on groceries and dates for evening meals to break dawn-to-dusk fasting during the month of Ramzan.

It's common practice across many Muslim-majority nations for liquor stores and hotels to curb the sale of alcohol during Ramadan. Past year more accidents happened in the late morning rush hour between 10am and 11am than any other time.

Both public and private sector companies will have shorter work hours for the duration of Ramadan as many employees are fasting.

To prepare for the fast, Muslims eat what is commonly called "suhoor", a pre-dawn meal of power foods to get them through the day. "Therefore the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, May 16", said the ISNA.

Though the Quran harps on the need to fast during the holy month of Ramadan, it also has room for some exceptions.

As the holiest month of the year, it is a crucial period for practising Muslims and underpins some of the religion's core values, such as prayer and giving to charity.

In one of his lectures in Shaqraa, Khudairy explained that the first lunar phase is the New Moon and it takes the moon 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds to complete one cycle of this phase.

Adults, expect pregnant women, women in their menstrual cycle, people suffering from illness, the old and those travelling, observe fast.

During Ramadan, Muslims may also read the whole Quran, while some choose to perform extra prayers in the evening called tarawih.
