  • Nipah Virus Kills One More in Kerala Public Meetings Banned

A 28-year-old nurse in the southern Indian state of Kerala who died in an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been hailed as a hero after it emerged that she was infected while taking care of an affected family.

India began a fresh round of tests to trace the origin of a rare brain-damaging virus that has killed 13 people, a health official said on Monday, as initial tests on animals suspected of carrying the Nipah virus showed no sign of the disease.

Dahiya said the officials have been directed to get people showing symptoms of the viral infection quarantined without delay.

The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday chose to give Rs 10 lakh each to the sons of Lini, the nurse who died due to Nipah virus.

The dreaded Nipah virus has literally wiped out a family from Perambra in Kozhikode district of Kerala by claiming the life of the fourth member on Thursday. But bigger cities aren't far away, and the NBC News report said that any virus is just a flight away from anywhere in the world. The official further said confirmation is awaited with regard to one more death in Kozhikode.

Precautions: Avoid contact with bats or its faecal droppings and pigs. The disease has been confined to Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

Transmission of Nipah virus takes place through direct contact with infected bats or from other NiV-infected people and people have been also cautioned that they should not consume fruits that have fallen on to the ground.

Investigators have traced the recent outbreak of Nipah to a bat-infested well in Kerala from where the first victims drew water.

But he insisted Kerala was otherwise safe for tourists, as the infection "remains highly localised".

As of now, there is no vaccine for the treatment of Nipah Virus.

In the wake of deaths due to Nipah virus in Kerala, the neighbouring districts of Kozhikode and Mallappuram in the state have been put on "high alert" by a central health ministry team sent to the state.

When the virus infects human beings, it could range from merely being asymptomatic to also developing acute respiratory syndrome to fatal encephalitis. Primary treatment options include intensive care support with ventilator and BP support with standard infection control practice. In Bangladesh in 2004, humans were infected with Nipah virus after consuming date palm sap that had been contaminated by infected fruit bats.
