  • 14 May 2018 Kevin O'Brien of Ireland celebrates after scoring a century during day four of the International Cricket Test match between Ireland and Pakistan at Malahide in Co. Dublin

Pakistan won the Dublin test against Ireland by 5 wickets.

Resuming Day Five on their overnight score of 319-7, Ireland added 20 more runs to their total in the second-innings before being bowled out.

Pakistan cricket team captain Sarfraz Ahmed praised the character of young batsmen Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam after they ensured his decision to enforce the follow-on in the Ireland cricket team's inaugural Test did not backfire.

For all that early excitement though, Pakistan gradually took the game away from Ireland, thanks in no small part to 22-year-old Imam, who batted with patience and a sound technique to end on a well-made 74 not out.

Imam shared a vital 126-run stand with Babar Azam (59) for the fourth wicket.

Abbas also took the wickets of Boyd Rankin (6) and Tyrone Kane (14), who were both bowled, to finish with figures of 5-66.

Should they go on to claim a win in their first step into the unknown, it would surely prove to be one of the most striking results in global cricket in recent times, with their opponents Pakistan being well-established test side.

That wasn't to be the only remarkable moment of Ireland's initiation as a Test match nation.

The unanimous verdict from the cricket world showed that it was great to see Ireland play Test cricket, and even greater to come out with an extremely competitive performance on their Test debut. At that stage, they were still 116 runs behind.

Babar was dropped on nine runs in the 19th over when Balbirnie could not hold a catchable chance and the right-hander immediately made Ireland pay by thumping two of his next four deliveries through the covers for boundaries.

Although it was nearly inevitable that the upset was too far gone, Ireland further added to a respectable scoreline and outstanding match in general producing a further outing through Stuart Thompson's dismissal of Safraz Ahmed for 8, Pakistan now at 152-5.

A quick turnaround, as Pakistan came out to knock off the 160 runs needed to secure the victory ahead of their tour of England.

4 - As many as four Test debutants scored fifties in this match - Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Kevin O'Brien (Century) and Stuart Thompson.

Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood suggested after stumps on Sunday that Amir's lengthy time away from the game allied to the fact he had been involved in all three worldwide formats-Tests, one-dayers and Twenty20s-since coming back had taken a toll on the swing bowler. There were 11 caps being handed out, we had all our family and friends here and with all the build up to the game there were a lot of emotions for every lad, so to go out and start how we did was fantastic. That's always been known to be there but Test cricket is Test cricket for a reason, it's there in the name, you did get tested and we were after the first innings.

Only three teams have won a test after following on - England in 1894 and 1981, and India in 2001.
