Pompeo: 'Bad deal' with North Korea 'not an option' for US

  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testifies during a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee

While testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Capitol Hill, Pompeo said, "If the right deal is not on the table, we will respectfully walk away" from the coming negotiations with the Asian nation concerning its nuclear and missile programs.

"All-in-one would be nice, I can tell you", Trump said.

"This could be something that comes right to the end and doesn't happen", said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"I will guarantee his safety, yes", Trump said, noting that promise was conditioned on an agreement to complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

"We have made zero concessions to Chairman Kim and have no intention to do so", Pompeo said.

Mr Trump later denied the USA would follow the "Libyan model" if an agreement was reached with North Korea.

There was no word on how the South Korean reporters might reach North Korea to catch up with their colleagues.

A handful of foreign journalists, including from South Korea, were originally invited to attend.

Despite claims to the contrary by Trump critics who are intent on denying the president even the semblance of credit for the upcoming talks, Pompeo suggested the first meeting in history between a sitting American president and the leader of North Korea is still on. On his most recent trip he brought back three Americans who had been held by North Korea.

He said he had raised it with Kim "and it will be part of the discussions as we move forward".

While Pompeo testified, worldwide journalists left Wednesday on a marathon journey to a North Korea nuclear test site, after Pyongyang belatedly cleared a number of South Korean media to witness what it says will be the dismantling of its only nuclear test facility.

The train trip was expected to take 8-12 hours, followed by several hours on a bus and then an hour hike to the site itself. -South Korean military exercises.

President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with Kim Jong Un to discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons program on June 12 in Singapore, but recently leaders of both countries have cast doubt on whether the meeting will take place.

Talks between the Koreas will likely resume after Friday, once Max Thunder finishes, said Moon's media secretary, Yoon Young-chan.

Punggye-ri has been the site for all six of the North's nuclear tests, the latest and by far the most powerful in September previous year, which Pyongyang said was a Hydrogen bomb.

Skepticism about the North's intentions have mounted in recent weeks after Kim's government pulled out of planned peace talks with the South last week, objecting to long-scheduled joint military exercises between United States and South Korean forces.

Last week, Pyongyang threatened to pull out of the 12 June summit in Singapore if the U.S. pressed for its unilateral nuclear disarmament.

But the U.S. can not protect Kim from threats inside North Korea.

Meanwhile, North Korea has clearly stated that it does not want to hold the meeting if the condition for its success is complete denuclearization.

America's superpower rivals were tracking the developments closely.

Pompeo didn't define what "credible steps" by North Korea might look like, giving the administration leeway to make that decision later - and possibly to declare victory from a summit without an unambiguous timetable from North Korea. The maximum pressure campaign of diplomatic and economic sanctions is bearing fruit with the historic meeting set to take place on June 12th.

Pompeo says previous USA administrations had been "fooled before and we can't permit that to happen again".

Last week Kim, upset over US-South Korea military drills and indelicate comments by US national security adviser John Bolton, threatened to pull out of the June 12 summit, and Trump admitted yesterday the meeting was in doubt.
