Subtropical Storm Alberto forms in the Atlantic

Before the 2018 North Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, meteorologists will have to cross out one of the names given to this year's tropical systems. It still remains an unorganized mess as it meanders off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula but is expected to churn northward into the Gulf of Mexico and approach Florida this weekend.

Subtropical Storm Alberto officially formed around 10 a.m. just off the Yucatán Peninsula in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, which means the system has picked up a noticeable rotation and kicked up winds topping 39 miles per hour.

A subtropical storm has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center.

If the system develops, it would be named Alberto.

Alberto's winds remained at 40 miles per hour and the barometric pressure had not changed from 1005mb.

The Gulf is particularly warm right now, so there's a slight chance Alberto could intensify to hurricane strength if it spends enough time over warm water, according to Norcross. Gradual strengthening is forecast for the next 72 hours. Forecasters say heavy rains are likely across western Cuba, much of Florida and the northern Gulf Coast into early next week. It also means that any system (cluster of thunderstorms hanging out in the Caribbean) has the chance to move north and intensify in the Gulf of Mexico.

In fact, the NHC now warns there is a 70-percent chance of a tropical depression or tropical storm forming in the next two days, and an 90-percent chance it happens by Memorial Day.

Tropical Storm Watches have been posted for Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties in South Mississippi.

The rest of the state can also expect rain, though in the range of 2 to 4 inches.

The latest rainfall predictions from the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center call for 1-3 inches of rain through next week in south Louisiana. Rainfall could reach up to 6 inches in parts of Florida up to the Carolinas.

Make sure you've got Live Alert 19 if you're traveling to the coast this weekend for the latest advisories, radar imagery, and any severe weather alerts if they're issued.
