  • Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire

The 28-year-old woman broke her foot when her auto hit a fire truck stopped at a red light while going 60 miles per hour (97 kph).

Tesla's Autopilot system uses radar, cameras with 360-degree visibility and sensors to detect nearby cars and objects. Witnesses said the vehicle "did not brake or take any action to avoid the collision" but the driver has since admitted to police that she had been looking at her phone prior to the collision.

A Tesla spokesperson did not comment following the disclosure about the use of the feature.

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the ~40,000 people who died in us auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", he said in a tweet.

South Jordan police said the Tesla Model S was going 60 miles per hour when it slammed into the back of a fire truck stopped at a red light.

A Tesla spokesperson told Newsweek on Tuesday: "Tesla has not yet received any data from the vehicle and thus does not know the facts of what occurred, including whether Autopilot was engaged".

The driver of the fire department vehicle suffered minor whiplash and was not taken to a hospital.

Tesla officials and Utah police wouldn't provide additional details Monday about the Friday evening crash that left the Tesla Model S driver with a broken ankle. "An impact at that speed usually results in severe injury or death".

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a Tesla crash in Florida last week that killed two high school students.

Tesla co-founder Elon Musk has slammed recent coverage of a road traffic collision involving one of his company's electric vehicles, which was reportedly on autopilot mode.

Two teenagers died and a third was injured after a Tesla they were travelling was involved in a single vehicle collision last Tuesday night. Meanwhile, a fatal crash in California, which happened when a Model X was on autopilot mode, is still under investigation.

In April, Musk was asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King, "what's the goal of having autopilot if you still have to put your hands on the wheel?"

In another Twitter message on Monday, Musk said the "probability of fatality is much lower in a Tesla", saying Tesla would begin reporting safety numbers from the second quarter of 2018.

"The system worked as described, which is that it's a hands-on system. Approx 4X better than avg", Musk said. A driver was behind the wheel of the test vehicle in that case but failed to halt in time. He said Tesla's record of one fatality every 512 million kilometres compared favourably with the 2017 national average of 138 million kilometres, according to safety regulators.
