The Turkish foreign ministry on Wednesday also told the Israeli consul general in Istanbul to leave Turkey "for a period of time", the foreign ministry said.

President Erdogan said the Israeli ambassador to Ankara had been expelled on Tuesday afternoon and its own ambassador to Tel Aviv has been recalled for instructions from the government.

The two leaders called for an emergency Islamic summit to discuss the USA embassy relocation to Jerusalem, which undermines future opportunities for any peaceful settlement, and the repercussions of Israel's violence in occupied Palestine, Qatar-based English newspaper Gulf Times said.

Furthermore, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an emergency meeting in Istanbul regarding Palestine on May 18.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has told Israel's consul general in Istanbul to return to Israel "for some time", state-run Anadolu news agency said on Wednesday, after Israeli forces killed more than 60 Palestinians during protests on the Gaza border.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim also said that Muslim countries should review their ties with Israel after Monday's violence.

Turkey has also asked Israel's consul general in Istanbul to leave as part of the expanding diplomatic spat between the countries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit back at Erdogan, with a tweeted jibe in Hebrew that as a leading supporter of Palestinian Islamist group Hamas "there's no doubt he's an expert on terror and slaughter".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began his three-day state visit to Britain on Sunday by praising the country as "an ally and a strategic partner, but also a real friend". Erdogan regards himself as a champion of the Palestinian cause and a year ago hosted an OIC summit in Istanbul to denounce US President Donald Trumps decision to recognise occupied-al-Quds as Israel's capital.

Citing widespread opposition in the United Nations to the embassy move, Mr Erdogan said: "The US claims to be powerful". While accepting that Israel had the right to defend its borders, she said its use of live ammunition was "deeply troubling".

"America says "I am strong and so I am right". The demonstrations went peacefully, although one man was arrested in Ankara for throwing eggs and stones at the residence of the Israeli ambassador.
