"My thoughts are now with the family of Virunga Park ranger Rachel Makissa Baraka who was killed during the kidnapping, and with the injured driver", Johnson said in the statement.

One park ranger was killed during the incident in Africa's oldest national park and three other people, including the British citizens, were abducted.

The two British tourists were kidnapped last week at a national park which is well known for its rare mountain gorillas in the central African country.

Unidentified armed men ambushed the group near the village of Kibati just north of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, according to Mambo Kawaya, the head of a group of local civil society organisations.

"I pay tribute to the DRC authorities and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation for their tireless help during this awful case", Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement.

Two British tourists who were kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been freed, the United Kingdom government and Congolese park officials said Sunday.

The attack brought the number of rangers murdered in the park up to 175 in 20 years.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Sunday announced that the two Britons held hostage in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been released unharmed.

Park Director Emmanuel de Merode said she showed "true bravery" in her work.

The British Foreign Office confirmed it was in touch with the Congolese authorities following the incident and said its staff were supporting the tourists' families.

The park has seen rising violence in recent months as armed groups stage raids to steal resources, particularly charcoal.

The national park, which runs along the border with Uganda and Rwanda, covers 3,000 sq miles (7,800 sq km). A wildlife park guard was killed in the ambush, while the tourist's driver was also kidnapped.

It is a Unesco world heritage site and home to critically-endangered mountain gorillas, as well as lions, elephants and hippos.
