Merck also has committed 300,000 doses of the vaccine for emergency use.

"Everything is ready for the vaccine".

The WHO and its partners are responding quickly, concerned that this outbreak has the potential to spread because of its location. Mobile laboratories have been sent to Mbandaka and Bikoro.

But the town is a port, on Lake Tumba.

At least 18 people have died in connection to the Ebola virus in the western Democratic Republic of Congo. To the north is Bangui (population 800,000), the capital of the Central African Republic.

World Health Organization said it had released $1 million to spend on supplies and aid.

"This is an experimental vaccine, not a licensed product, and there are a lot of complications", including ensuring it is stored at the correct temperature, Salama said. The vaccine could arrive in Kinshasa on Tuesday, WHO spokesman Eugene Kabambi said.

The UN agency is working with the country's Ministry of Health and global nongovernmental organization M-decins Sans Fronti-res to conduct ring vaccinations across the affected region, where contacts of those infected, followed by contacts of those contacts, would all be vaccinated.

"That's our plan. And so far things are going as planned", he said, expressing hope that the quick response will speed containment of the outbreak.

East African states bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had issued an alert warning resident, travelers and visitors calling to the region to take serious precaution over the outbreak of the deadly and infectious Ebola virus recently reported in Bikoro, Equateur Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DRC has seen 18 deaths over the past five weeks, but Congolese authorities together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other worldwide groups have now mobilized staff and resources to contain the virus. A person becomes infected after making contact with an infected animal, such as a fruit bat or primate.

The Ebola vaccine being provided - called rVSV-ZEBOV - is an experimental vaccine that has been shown to be safe in humans and highly effective against the Ebola virus, according to the WHO.

Controlling the spread in the community is combatted by tracing and isolating people who have been in contact with an Ebola victim.

"The virus can be transmitted via direct contact with bodily fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from EVD".

In an interview with The New Times on Monday, Dr. Diane Gashumba, the Minister for Health said no signs of Ebola have so far been detected on Rwandan soil and that the ministry is working with different stakeholders to ensure citizens are protected from the outbreak.
