Earlier on Thursday, Jayapal sent out his tweet, showing her arm held up and surrounded by #FamiliesBelongTogether protesters at the nation's capital.

They guessed about 5,000 people would attend.

Consequently, more than 2,000 children who arrived illegally in the United States with adult relatives were separated from them and placed in detention facilities or with foster families around the country. The demonstrators were there in protest of the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy that treats illegal border crossings as criminal offenses.

There will also be a large march in New York City across the Brooklyn Bridge and a rally in Washington, D.C., near the White House. "This is absolutely bigger than politics".

The number of rallies, protests and marches planned for Saturday to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies has expanded to more than 700 nationwide, organizers said. Facing a massive public backlash, last week Trump issued an order allowing families to stay together after being detained at the border. The next day, a judge in California granted a preliminary injunction giving the government 30 days to reunify minors with their families, 14 days if the child is younger than five.

Hundreds of women gathered in Washington, D.C. on Thursday to drive one message home: "We care".

Here's what you need to know about the Families Belong Together rallies. "It's going to work out great".

Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal was arrested along with 575 other women during a protest staged in Washington against US President Donald Trump's border and immigration policy.

"I met with all 174 of the women that were there, and it was absolutely heartbreaking to hear their stories, to hear about how their children had been taken away".

The women chanted slogans such as "we care" and "where are the children" in a largely peaceful standoff with police, who ordered them to leave. "The die-hards among us could go to the border, but we really needed to have something that got people in the streets, that hundreds of thousands could participate in". They were charged with unlawfully demonstrating, a misdemeanor.

Linda Sarsour, a co-founder of the Women's March, said she hoped the protests, apart from sending a message to the administration and Congress, would mobilize people to vote in the midterms.

"I sought it out", Elly Brinkley, who arrived from NY earlier this week, said Thursday.

"At this moment, there is actually different momentum around immigration".
