Apple could bring new high-end AirPods and over-ear headphones in 2019

  • Sales of Apple's Home Pod speaker have reportedly fallen below expectations

An earlier report from Barclays analysts claimed that Apple would add the noise-cancellation feature to its AirPods sometime in 2019.

Apple is going to release an updated version of the AirPods in 2019 with new features. Bloomberg's report offers up nearly no information, saying only that a refresh is in the works and that Apple may move away from Inventec for production. It won't enable users to swim with the next-generation AirPods. There were over-ear headphones coming from Apple, too.

They'll cost more than the exist $159 AirPods, giving consumers a baseline and higher end model - similar to the iPhone. An in-house audio product team is run by Gary Geaves, formerly an engineer from B&W, a maker of speaker systems and headphones. For the next-generation HomePod that's expected to launch next year, the company is looking for other partners. We don't know much about these, but Bloomberg's sources say that they'll be Apple-branded.

The report also notes that the current AirPods are set to get a slight revamp this year, with a new chip and hands-free "Hey Siri" support, however it's not certain whether production will continue to be provided by Inventec Corp, notes 9to5Mac.

A new report has suggested once again that Apple is working on its first in-house pair of over-ear headphones. The rumoured over the ear headphones could be competing with the premium headphones from rivals such as Bose and Sennheiser.

Apple wanted to release them at year's end, but it struggled to develop them, which forced the company to push back the launch to 2019, according to Bloomberg.

Apple is also said to be in the process of developing a new version of its HomePod smart speaker. They are meant to be higher end than Beats headphones and are meant to compete with the high-end models of headphones which ship from firms like Bose Corp and Sennheiser. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. Apple introduced its first generation AirPods a year ago which allowed users to seamlessly connect to any Bluetooth-compatible smartphone, tablet or computer without needing any wires at all.
