The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion won her first three singles matches (and played three doubles matches, including one Sunday) at her first Grand Slam since capturing the 2017 Australian Open title while eight weeks pregnant. "It's kind of hard to play when I can't physically serve", she explained.

After her win over No.6 seed Karolina Pliskova earlier on Saturday, Sharapova said: "Any time you play against Serena you know what you're up against".

Sharapova is seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam since her suspension following her confession and is playing her first French Open since 2015 after being refused a wildcard by tournament organisers a year ago.

"I gave up so much".

"I just always try to think positive and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully, the next event and the rest of the year".

The possibility of Williams facing Sharapova had been grabbing attention since the draw was made at Roland Garros 10 days ago.

The 36-year-old said she had never had this type of injury before.

"I can only take solace in the fact that I'm going to continue to get better", Williams told reporters. "It didn't get a lot better". I thought it was a flawless opportunity to see how I was going. While Williams was on maternity leave, Sharapova recovered from an arm injury and a hiatus brought on by the discovery of meldonium in her system.

Serena Williams of the USA returns a shot against Germany's Julia Georges during their third round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris.

Sharapova will now play either Garbiñe Muguruza or Lesia Tsurenko in the quarter-finals.

In her press conference, Serena said she began to feel the issue in her third-round singles match against Julia Goerges.

"And I have made every sacrifice that I could. Her game matches so well against mine, and it is hard, because like I keep saying, I've given up so much to be here".

Williams said she will have an MRI scan in Paris on Tuesday and will stay in the French capital at least until the extent of her injury is clear. It's disappointing for me, the fans and the tournament that it's not going to happen.
