Donald Trump Considering Pardon for Martha Stewart, Commuting Gov. Rod Blagojevich Sentence

  • Trump to pardon Dinesh D’Souza

D'Souza, 53, admitted in May 2014 that he illegally reimbursed two "straw donors" who donated $US10,000 each to the unsuccessful 2012 US Senate campaign in NY of Wendy Long, a Republican. He was initially sentenced to five-years probation, including eight months of living in a half-way home and a hefty $30,000 fine.

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood on Thursday repeated her office's call on lawmakers to change state law in order to ensure individuals pardoned by President Donald Trump could still face legal consequences. Possibly mixing up years with actual corruption charges, Trump added four years onto Blagojevich's actual 14-year sentence in saying "eighteen years is, I think, really unfair". Cohen, meanwhile, is under investigation by federal prosecutors in NY for possible campaign-finance violations and other possible crimes.

Patti Blagojevich, the wife of disgraced former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, praised President Donald Trump Thursday night on Fox News while disparaging James Comey and Robert Mueller.

Attorneys Deborah Blum and Seth Berenzweig on President Trump considering pardons for Martha Stewart and Rod Blagojevich and the fallout from ABC canceling Roseanne.

Stewart had been prosecuted by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, whom Trump fired recently.

Trump has pardoned other notable conservatives convicted of various offenses.

In his guilty plea, D'Souza acknowledged he promised to reimburse two close associates if each would contribute $10,000 to Long's campaign, an act he said he knew "was wrong and something the law forbids".

But prosecutors said the charges were nonpolitical and arose out of the FBI's "routine review" of campaign filings. In a separate tweet, titled "KARMA IS A B-- DEPT:" D'Souza accused Bharara of being out to "destroy a fellow Indian American to advance his career".

Joseph diGenova, who served as US attorney for the District of Columbia under Ronald Reagan, said it is odd to suggest that presidents should wait until after they no longer have to face voters before granting controversial pardons. "Then he got fired & I got pardoned", D'Souza wrote.

As Simon Malloy of Media Matters pointed out, D'Souza himself admitted that was not "treated unfairly" by the court after he copped to knowingly violating campaign finance law by using his assistant and mistress as "straw donors". Though he claims that decision was not because of Comey's investigation into collusion between Russian Federation officials and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, the commander-in-chief told NBC News in May that he considered "this Russian Federation thing" before firing. Trump often mentioned Saucier's case on the campaign trail as he criticized his former Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, for her use of a private email server.

The reprieve of Arpaio, who was convicted of federal misdemeanor criminal contempt after a judge found he had defied a court order to stop targeting Latinos with sweeps of suspected undocumented immigrants, renewed criticism of the president's handling of racially charged issues.
