Muslims in most countries around the world are celebrating Eid Al-Fitr on Friday.

The meeting of the moon sighting committee for the moon of Shawwal 1439 AH will be held at Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) here, to be chaired by Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, officials said.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr celebrations will officially start on Friday, June 15, announced Morocco's Ministry of Religious Endowments and Islamic Affairs on Thursday night.

Ramadan began in Morocco on Thursday, May 17, marking a unified first fasting day throughout all Muslim countries, including North Africa and Saudi Arabia.

The moon can only be sighted if it is 26 hours and 42 minutes old, it added while stating that at sundown the moon will be 19 hours and three minutes old.

The fast observed by people during the holy month is known as roza and on the last day, people exchange greetings and pleasantries.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which is a lunar calendar based on the cycles of the moon. The crescent moon of Shawwal could not be sighted in the country on Thursday and hence Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan announced.

The sighting of the moon signifies an end to the holy month of Ramadan and the fast of millions of Muslims across the world.

Abubakar congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of 30-day Ramadan, and urged that the events of the period should reinforce the fear of Allah in the hearts of believers.

King Salman also thanked Allah for having helped Saudi Arabia "remain adherent to Islamic Shariah law".

The Sultan urged the Muslim Ummah to sustain fervent prayers for the nation led by Muhammadu Buhari, other leaders, as well as for sustainable peace and unity in Nigeria and beyond.
