French, German Leaders Urge 'European Response' To Migrant Crisis

  • Members said Mr Seehofer would defy Merkel on Monday if no compromise has been reached by then and go ahead with the plans alone

The interior minister now wants to turn away at the border new arrivals who have previously been registered in another European Union country - often their first port of call, Italy or Greece.

Germany's Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said on Sunday a row between his Bavarians and Chancellor Angela Merkel is serious but can be overcome, a signal that he may compromise to avoid a full-blown German coalition crisis.

Seehofer and Merkel have long had an awkward relationship. Merkel isn't against a stricter border regime, but wants this to be part of a European agreement, which she hopes to achieve at an EU summit at the end of this month.

The CSU's Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder said that the ongoing "asylum tourism" meant that, as a government, "we're nearing the endgame when it comes to our credibility".

This unilateral approach, a reversal of her 2015 open-door policy, would undermine Merkel's authority and be a blow to the EU's Schengen open-border system.

As outspoken pro-Europeans, Merkel and Macron both face harsh opposition from nationalist and right-wing populist forces at home, and in the governments of Italy, Austria and several eastern European countries.

"My answer is that the interior minister presented the crime statistics a short while ago and they speak for themselves", Merkel told a news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron when asked about a recent flurry of tweets from Trump.

The leaders of Germany and France agreed on Tuesday to create a budget for the euro zone and hailed a "new chapter" for the currency union, but they left the details to be worked out later with other members of the 19-country bloc.

Merkel's woes come as European Union countries are once again at loggerheads over immigration, triggered by Italy's refusal this month to allow a rescue ship carrying 630 migrants to dock.

Merkel blocked the planned rollout last week, arguing that a bloc-wide solution was needed to what is a European problem.

The CDU's Bavarian sister party and coalition partner has threatened to press ahead with its own plans without obtaining the chancellor's consent if no solution is found until then.

With an eye on October's Bavaria state election, the CSU is anxious to assure voters that it has a roadmap to curb the migrant influx.

How it would be funded was also up for discussion with other eurozone members, said Merkel, suggesting that it could involve regular transfers made by individual countries or a tax on financial transactions.

According to the newspaper, Seehofer intends to give Merkel two weeks on the solution of common European problem of the issue of refugees.

Later in the day, she will host the new Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who is heading a government with an anti-immigration agenda.

Germany received more than a million refugees in the last thee years, mostly from Syria and Iraq.
