Trump - who left the G-7 summit and headed to Singapore for his planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - lashed out at Trudeau after revoking USA endorsement of the communique, dubbing the Canadian prime minister "meek and mild".

Before jumping on Air Force One to fly to Canada, which is hosting the summit in La Malbaie north of Quebec City, Trump called for a return to the body's pre-2014 "G8" formula.

After departing from the Quebec summit for Singapore, Trump tweeted that Trudeau's remarks at a news conference, where he said Canada would not be pushed around, "were very dishonest and weak".

Earlier on Saturday, Trudeau said that he would "with absolute certainty" impose retaliatory tariffs on the United States in response to Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum, which the Trump administration imposed in the name of national security. Trump insisted. "That would be the ultimate thing, whether or not that works, but I did suggest it". "Many of the current discussions about trade, especially with the U.S., despite the common commitment, will continue".

Trump's early exit on Saturday also means he will be gone before allies begin closing news conferences likely to be laden with criticism of the U.S. stance on trade and Trump's abrupt suggestion on Friday that Russian Federation be re-admitted to the elite grouping.

"After calling out Trudeau and Macron before the summit, he took a different approach on Saturday, "[congratulating] he leaders of other countries for crazily being able to make these trade deals that were so good for their countries and bad for the United States" and chastising his predecessors for allowing the U.S.to be taken advantage of.

"We have to have deals that are fair", Trump said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged differences between the United States and the six other members of the G7 remained, but said a joint statement on trade was expected to be issued at the end of the summit. "Our tariffs are in response to his of 270 per cent on dairy!"

In retrospect, the consensus had appeared shaky from the outset, and even as Trump flew out it was clear that the summit had failed to heal the rift on trade.

"We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit", the statement, released by Cameron Ahmad, said.

Trump says his tariffs are meant to protect USA industry and workers from unfair global competition as part of his "America First" agenda.

Vice President Mike Pence told Trudeau he would have to agree to that before Trump would agree to meet him.

He added: "Canadians are polite, we're reasonable but we also will not be pushed around".

Trudeau added that he had not agreed to a new North American Free Trade Agreement with a sunset clause. And we charge nothing", he said."And it's going to stop.

"For us, it was important that we have a commitment for a rule-based trade order, that we continue to fight against protectionism and that we want to reform the WTO", Ms Merkel told reporters.

The president's sharp comments came as he is now en route to Singapore for a highly anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, set to be held on Tuesday.
