Instagram's new video service app is aimed directly at YouTube which will allow creators to upload full-screen videos up to 1-hour in length. He also mentioned that most of the video apps ask people to find and browse through a directory, unlike TV, where people just use to turn it on and start watching their favorite show. It starts playing as soon as you open the app, so you don't have to search to get started.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, has just introduced a brand new initiative for "vertical format video", which means it'll be presented in portrait mode rather than landscape, called IGTV. To spur future growth, the company announced a new feature: Instagram television. Viewing the videos is also possible within the Instagram app as well.

Long-form vertical video! Here we are.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom made the announcement during an event in San Francisco today, exactly five years after the company first added video to its platform.

There are also some hints of the defunct Vine service in there, appropriate, as some of IGTV's stalwarts like King Bach started on there. There's a button in the top right part of the Instagram app, next to the DM paper airplane, or you can download the app separately. As on YouTube, regular IGTV users may set up their own channel.

What do you think, will you be watching IGTV?

With IGTV, Instagram "begins a new chapter of video", perhaps one that Snapchat actually started quite some time ago. Since then, the video-sharing website has ballooned to a user base of 1.8 billion, becoming a platform for aspiring content creators looking to strike it big.

While I understand the reason IGTV videos are vertical-only (the primary focus is smartphone users), it is a bit short-sighted.

The objective appears to be to monetise the app and create a revenue stream through ads much like what YouTube videos do for Google. All of the longer videos in the IGTV app will also be available to watch in the main Instagram app. We hope it brings you closer to the people and things you love. It also allows you to watch a video that you left off midway. For more on Instagram's new venture, follow here.
