  • French Open results LIVE Roland Garros latest scores as Nadal faces Bolelli

"It was an emotional thing for me to play with him here in this court", Nadal said. Juan Martin del Potro was a victor over former quarterfinalist ALbert Ramos Vinolas 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

Isner had 17 aces and saved the only break point he faced in a tight contest, breaking Herbert's serve just once in seven attempts.

The pair were regarded as two of the best young players of their generation as juniors, but Nadal has won 16 Grand Slam titles while Gasquet has never reached a final at the majors.

Nadal eventually lost points, of course, but never really relented in a meaningful way en route to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 third-round victory that was only his latest declaration of dominance on this surface and at this Grand Slam tournament.

"I think we know each other since we were 14", said the Russian. Ball boy displayed some neat forehands and backhands after sending the first ball into the net.

Mertens won 6-3, 6-1 against No. 24 Daria Gavrilova.

Del Potro had eight aces and broke his Spanish opponent's serve six times on Court Philippe Chatrier, taking just 29 minutes to win the third set.

Alexander, who is seeded No 2 at Roland Garros, won his third-round match Friday.

Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson, meanwhile, advanced to the next round after respective wins over Borna Coric and Mischa Zverev.

Play has begun under puffy clouds on Day 7 of the French Open, with No. 3-seeded Garbine Muguruza on Court Philippe Chatrier seeking a fourth-round berth against Samantha Stosur of Australia.

The No. 3-seeded Croat won the 2014 U.S. Open and has reached the final at two of the past three majors - Wimbledon previous year and the Australian Open in January.

Elsewhere in the men's competition, Italy's Fabio Fognini beat Great Britain's Kyle Edmund in a five-set thriller.

There was more French despair in the delayed match between Belgian eighth seed David Goffin and France's Gael Monfils, who squandered four match points before losing a closely-fought encounter.

Sloane Stephens also advanced to the fourth round, but the 10th-seeded American had a much more hard time beating Italy's Camila Giorgi 4-6, 6-1, 8-6. He'll next face No. 11 seed Diego Schwartzman, a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 victor against Borna Coric.

Sharapova, who made a comeback to the French Open for the first time since 2015, after serving a doping ban in 2016 and refused a wildcard entry in 2017, comfortably saw off Croatia's Donna Vekic, 7-5, 6-4.

Third-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain has crushed Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round of the French Open.
