Nations defend UN Human Rights Council after United States pullout

21 June, 2018, 19:34 | Author: Kristen Ingram
  • Russia strongly rebuffed U.S. criticism of its air strikes in Syria on Tuesday reminding Washington how it had support

This includes the fact that the Human Rights Council membership looks like the rest of the U.N. -about one-third of its members are authoritarian states bent on undermining the global human rights system, one-third are liberal democratic states committed to strengthening worldwide norms and practices, and one-third are persuadable swing states that have joined the United States repeatedly to hold states to account for their imperfect human rights performance.

Trump exhibited the most unctuous form of moral equivalence in an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier when asked about North Korea's human rights violations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the USA move, branding the council "a biased, hostile, anti-Israel organization that has betrayed its mission of protecting human rights". But experts say that Washington's decision to leave will make it more hard for the U.S.to advocate for human rights in the future.

World leaders from European Union to China have condemned the USA decision and praised the council's role in promoting human rights across the globe.

The council was established in 2006, replacing the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights. On the downside, this also meant that Israel and its harsh treatment of Palestinians would get exaggerated attention on the agenda, a result of the USA withdrawal from the Council's early days when then-Ambassador John Bolton railed against the body's imperfections and left Israel out to dry. We have a Constitution. "When they seek to infringe on our national sovereignty, we will not be silent".

Last year, Haley announced that the United States was considering withdrawing from the council unless changes were made in relation to the "biased" stance against Israel.

"The council's continued and well-documented bias against Israel is unconscionable", Pompeo said.

Russia's mission to the U.N.in NY posted on Twitter late on Tuesday: "U.S. attempts to blame the whole world for the politicization of HRC work are especially cynical".

"The US is in a pretty similar position to what it was [then] which is that a lot of other countries just didn't see it, and don't see it now, as any kind of credible guarantor of human rights", he said. But some said the decision would have been a bigger shock to the United Nations system and more of a clarion call for the cause of human rights if it were not coming from a U.S. administration that has shown a broad disdain for multilateral organizations and actions.

"Israel, the world's only Jewish state and the only democracy in the Middle East, is the only country subjected to a separate, permanent agenda item at the UNHRC, which targets it for more condemnation and punishment than any other country on the planet", they noted.

"It's the right decision to defund the Human Rights Council". Obama joined. Trump is taking us out. Item 7 on "Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories" has been part of the council's regular business nearly as long as it has existed.

The US' move is unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council, as no country has ever dropped out voluntarily. "All Trump seems to care about is defending Israel".

While Israel, which is not a member of the 47-nation council, can not follow suit even if it wanted to, sources maintained Wednesday that it was possible and even likely that Netanyahu would soon announce that Israel was ceasing all contacts with the council.
