'One-time shot' for peace with North Korea

Although Mr. Trump has chosen largely to ignore the human rights abuses in North Korea, there is still enormous hostility in Washington toward what remains a Communist dictatorship.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this on Sunday, adding that the June 12 summit will give Singapore global publicity and demonstrate the country's standing in the worldwide community.

North Korean leader Kim is expected to arrive at Changi airport tomorrow, a source involved in the planning of the trip told Reuters yesterday.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shakes hands with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana in Singapore on June 10. This is a leader who really is an unknown personality.

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim recognition as the leader of a "normal" country and as an equal of the United States leader.

People crowded around poster stands at subway stations around the capital to read the news and gathered at noon in front of the city's main train station to watch a big screen display of images of Kim getting off the special Air China flight that took him to Singapore.

The bodyguards were glimpsed flanking Kim's Mercedes-Benz limousine as it traveled to the St. Regis Hotel in Singapore on Sunday.

The two leaders meet at 9am (1100 AEST) on Tuesday at the Capella on Sentosa island, a refurbished British Army artillery mess that is now one of Singapore's most expensive luxury hotels.

"I love my friend Lindsey Graham, but I think first we have to give a chance at peace, and that's why we outlined very clearly what a successful agreement would be", Menendez said.

That according to a senior official in President Donald Trump's administration.

On Monday, North Korean state media said Kim and Trump would discuss a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism" on the Korean peninsula, denuclearisation of the peninsula and other issues of mutual concern.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrives in Singapore on Sunday.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said Saturday in Beijing after returning from North Korea that "things will start happening within the next 24 hours".

Trump hopes the landmark talks will kick-start a process that eventually see Kim give up his nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.

Trump, who is staying in a separate hotel, the Shangri-La, is due to meet Lee today.

But in early 2018, North Korea began attempts to improve relations with South Korea by sending a team and delegates to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

When asked how he feels about the summit after landing in Singapore on Sunday afternoon, US President Donald Trump said, "Very good".

The North invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war pitted US-led United Nations troops backing Seoul against Pyongyang's forces which were aided by China.

Last year, the North made one of the biggest breakthroughs in its missile and nuclear weapons programs - which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion - when it announced that it had "completed" its state nuclear program after testing a missile capable of striking most, if not all, of the continental U.S. But some U.S. officials have questioned whether Trump was doing enough to get up to speed.
