Serena Williams seeded 25th for Wimbledon despite ranking of 183

  • Serena Williams is a seven-times champion at Wimbledon

Twenty-three-time Grand Slam victor Williams gave birth to her daughter Alexis in September and she returned to action in February having missed over a year out since winning the 2017 Australian Open.

In May, French Open officials declined to grant her a seed, touching off a debate about how the sport should treat its ranked players who return to the game following childbirth.

Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles during her career, was unseeded at the French Open.

"I think if it was a different player, not her, I think she would not be seeded".

"Why should I not be seeded if I have the right to be?"

"I think it's now right that WTA offers a protected ranking".

"I don't think it's the right thing to do", she said.

Our next tennis action comes from the German Open in Hamburg.

The 36-year-old American, who has returned to competitive tennis following the birth of her daughter last September, is 183rd in the WTA Tour rankings.

Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki lead the way, they can face the defending champion Garbine Muguruza or the US Open victor Sloane Stephens in the semifinals.

The U.S. Tennis Association says it does intend to seed Williams for the U.S. Open, which begins in August. The draw will be selected Friday, and the tournament starts Monday.

The defending champion usually reserves her best for the big occasions and is one of the leading candidates to stop Serena making a winning return to Wimbledon.

But the American has been slotted in between Maria Sharapova and Australia's Daria Gavrilova for Wimbledon after tournament officials decided the former victor deserved to be seeded. Caroline Wozniacki, John McEnroe and USTA president Katrina Adams have spoken out in support of Williams. Petra Kvitova, the two-time champ who is seeded No. 8, pulled out of her third-round match at Eastbourne on Wednesday with a hamstring problem, putting her status for Wimbledon in doubt.

Ivanka Trump championed a backlash and said the decision was "ridiculous" and that "no person should be penalised professionally for having a child". "She wants to continue to play".
