Severed rattlesnake head bites Texas man

  • The severed head of a snake can still be very dangerous a Texas man found out recently

A Corpus Christi man is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake, even after the snake had already been beheaded.

To prepare for the day's festivities, Jennifer told The Washington Post that she and her husband chose to tidy up the yard of their home near Lake Corpus Christi in southern Texas. And because the snake's head was no longer connected to a body when it bit him, she told KIII-TV that it discharged the full load of its venom all at once. Jennifer said she was pulling weeds in her garden when she came across a four-foot western diamondback rattlesnake hiding in the flowers.

"I reached down to pull out a little area of grass that was growing around one of my flowers, and I nearly grabbed the snake", she told The Washington Post.

Sutcliffe explained: 'A normal person who is going to get bit is going to get two to four doses of antivenom. Whereas a living rattlesnake will generally bite the victim, imparting a dose of venom into it in the process, a dead rattlesnake will apparently release all of its venom into the victim, as the Texas man found out the hard way.

He was eventually airlifted to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital, she said. And though there are about 7-8,000 snake bites from venomous snakes in the US each year, only about 10-12 of them, on average, result in fatalities, says trauma surgeon Michael Halpert. In 2013, a video of a decapitated copperhead in Alabama went viral.

Just like anyone else, Sutcliffe's husband tried to kill the snake.

It turns out snakes can still attack even an hour after they've been beheaded.

"The bite and envenomation reflex is triggered by some kind of information that comes into the mouth cavity", Beaupré said. Experts advise that it's far better to retreat indoors and call more experienced handlers from animal-control, the local police or the fire department to safely remove the snake.

Sutcliffe's husband remained in stable condition after receiving doses of antivenin, but continued to have impaired kidney function as a result of the incident.
