SpaceX deploys European satellite on Hawthorne company's 11th launch this year

  • SpaceX goes for its 11th launch of the year early on Monday

Watch a replay of the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral shortly after midnight Monday with the SES 12 communications satellite.

The satellite is created to expand SES' capabilities to deliver very small aperture terminal and high-throughput data connectivity and direct-to-home broadcasting services in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East. It will replace and augment the services now being provided on SES's NSS-6 satellite. Blazing internet speeds. Reliable cell coverage.

The SES-12 satellite is able to carry more communications payloads because it carries very little of the chemical fuel most spacecraft use to maneuver and hold their positions.

The SES-12 high throughput payload is meant to enhance connectivity in the aeronautical and maritime segments across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. SES-12 will also enable governments to provide connectivity programs to bridge the digital divide, and in allowing telcos, mobile network operators and internet service providers to deliver more cellular backhaul and faster broadband services. The satellite operator, SES, tweeted, "What a attractive start to the week!"

SpaceX is reportedly delaying its tourist moon shot, after earlier pushing back crewed tests for NASA's "space taxi" program.

SpaceX made no attempt to recover the earlier-generation "block 4" first stage, which was limited to only two flights.

News Brief: A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sent the SES-12 telecommunications satellite into orbit tonight in a no-drama night launch. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years. Following separation from the launcher, the satellite has completed its initialisation phase and has started electric orbit raising (EOR) operations as planned. The company is expecting both the USA and Europe to turn to the Falcon Heavy in the next couple of years for certain satellite launches.
