Trump forced into migrant U-turn

  • Donald Trump signs order to end family separations

Iowa voters learned that another 2020 prospect, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, was canceling a weekend appearance in the leadoff presidential caucus state to attend a demonstration at a refugee tent city along the U.S-Mexico border.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he didn't like seeing families separated at the Mexico border and reversed the policy that has already separated more than 2,300 children from their parents, sparking worldwide outrage.

According to a White House official, USA first lady Melania Trump "has been making her opinion known" to her husband that he needs to do whatever he can to keep families of migrants together.

May said images of migrant children kept in cage-like units were "deeply disturbing", and the Council of Europe, a global human rights watchdog, said Trump had abdicated any claim to moral leadership in the world.

Meanwhile, the document Trump signed won't reunite the more than 2,300 children now separated from their parents, whose plight Trump admitted privately this week was deeply damaging to him politically.

Under the administration's "zero-tolerance" policy introduced earlier this year, immigrant families who cross the border illegally are separated, with parents facing federal prosecution on illegal entry charges and children placed into the care of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Petzing said she's highly critical of policies that separate children from their parents at the border and policies that involve imprisoning and detaining children and others seeking safety.

Videos of youngsters in cages and an audiotape of wailing children have sparked anger in the U.S. from groups ranging from clergy to influential business leaders, as well as condemnation from overseas.

"[We] have to do more than say 'this isn't who we are.'" he wrote.

Trump said he didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated.

Joe Wilson of SC, announced he would support the legislation after meeting with Trump, who he said was persuasive.

"It is still very early and we are awaiting further guidance on the matter", said senior director for communications Brian Marriott.

"My wife feels strongly about it. Perhaps I'd rather be strong". Many come from states with large immigrant populations now at risk of deportation after Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Sanders said several Trump Cabinet members should step down in general, including Nielsen.

The Senate is considering narrower proposals to deal with the separation of families as a standalone issue.

And it has emerged that First Lady Melania Trump "has been making her opinion known" to her husband that he needs to do all he can to keep families of migrants together, according to the White House. The order also calls for the justice department to request to modify the Flores agreement to allow children to be held longer, but it is unclear what will happen if the law does not change.

Now the fight will probably move to the courts, with legal challenges to the administration's decision to hold detained families together while their immigration status is adjudicated.

Cincinnati resident Andrew Pappas supported President Donald Trump's decision to separate children from parents who crossed the border illegally because, he said, it got Congress talking about immigration reform.

"We're keeping families together, and this will solve that problem".

Even so, the executive order is not necessarily a panacea. "And now. everyone's talking about immigration reform and I think President Trump is getting exactly what he wants".

Justice Department lawyers will seek permission to allow for the detention of families until criminal and removal proceedings are completed.

Reyna Torres Mendivil, Mexico's consul general in San Antonio, told NPR's Audie Cornish that the process would be hampered by the USA separation process, which keeps parents in federal custody while moving children into facilities controlled by the Department of Health and Human Services.

At the meeting when he announced the executive order to roll back the family separation policy, he riffed on and on about immigration and how tough he needed to be "or our country would be overrun by people, by crime, by all of the things that we don't stand for and we don't want".

The order instructs federal agencies - notably the Defense Department - to prepare facilities to house the potentially thousands of families who will be detained.

The parliamentary path promises however arduous despite the Republican majority in Congress.

After visiting Capitol Hill on Tuesday night to rally a broad immigration bill, Trump said Wednesday that he still hopes that Congress will act.

Democrats have said that the situation is Trump's fault, and accused him of using the children as leverage to force them to negotiate on immigration and the president's long-promised border wall. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was heckled June 19 while she dined at a Mexican restaurant in the Washington area.
