Trump may invite Kim to visit White House. Or he may not

  • U.S. lawmakers want Trump to report on North Korea nuclear program

If Kim and Trump produce a deal, it would be called the "Trump model".

"I think he wants to go big or go home", said Michael Allen, a former National Security Council official under Republican President George W. Bush.

Trump also downplayed rumors that he would be playing golf with Kim when they meet in Singapore next week.

"I think we're over that, totally over that, and now we're going to deal and we're going to really start a process", Trump said.

An invitation to the White House, unthinkable only months ago, would go much further in conferring status as a global leader on a man who until this year had not left his own borders since taking office in 2011.

North Korea has rejected giving up its arsenal unilaterally and defends its nuclear and missile programs as a deterrent against what it sees as USA aggression. His response: "As he likes to say, 'who knows?' Everything in my professional background is screaming 'Don't go into the root cellar, Janet Leigh,' but maybe there is some strategy here that I am not seeing".

"I know Rudy", Pompeo said at a briefing on Trump's upcoming North Korea summit. Trump on Friday departs for a 24-hour stop in Canada for the Group of Seven summit of leading industrial nations.

"We're going to be fine, with respect to Iran", Trump said.

"I don't think it's nice going in under those circumstances". It's about the attitude.

That willingness to make a deal is something he will assess once he sits down with Kim, Trump suggested. Pyongyang's decades-long pursuit of atomic weapons and the means to deliver them to the US have seen it subjected to multiple rounds of sanctions by the UN Security Council, US, EU and others, and tensions soared past year as the two men traded personal insults and threats of war.

"He would look at it very favourably so that could happen", the U.S. president said at a joint press conference with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeted his alarm. It believes maintaining sanctions will give the USA the upper hand in negotiations with North Korea.

After what seemed like a lost opportunity, the summit between US and North Korea is officially back on cards. "It would be wonderful if it were".

In addressing a possible duration for the summit, the president pointed out it could be more than just one day.

"Normalizing relations is something that I would expect to do after everything is complete", Trump said.

"If they don't denuclearise, that will not be acceptable", he said.

Trump is seeking to get North Korea to agree to denuclearize but acknowledged that is not likely to happen immediately.

He added: "They have to denuke". "Sanctions are extraordinarily powerful".

"They asked me about what my political views were and if I had been involved with protests or riots in other countries", Howard X told Bloomberg News. "But that may happen". -North Korea summit meeting.

A Hong Kong-based entertainer who impersonates the North Korean leader said he was detained at Changi Airport after returning to Singapore ahead of the historic summit planned for Tuesday. North Korea apparently wants the same type of plane as Trump's Air Force One.

Critics contend that Trump's seat-of-the-pants approach may be too risky in dealing with North Korea, which alarmed Washington with its rapid advances on a long-range missile possibly capable of hitting the United States.

Above all, Trump seems most enthused by the notion of being the first sitting US leader to hold direct talks with a scion of the ruling Kim dynasty.

No previous USA administration had ever made such promises to North Korea in this way.

The engagement with North Korea is not being welcomed in all corners of the South.

He promised Mr Abe to raise the issue of Japanese abductees held in North Korea.
