Trump Says June 12 Meeting With Kim Jong-un Is Back On

  • North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol arrives at a hotel in New York U.S

This news came after senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol hand-delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to the President.

President Donald Trump said Thursday he expects a letter from Kim Jong Un confirming plans for their historic nuclear summit, as their top envoys thrashed out details at NY talks.

President Trump announced Friday that his on-again-off-again meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is once again on.

After a White House meeting Friday with a senior North Korean official, Trump said his meeting with Kim is back on for June 12 in Singapore.

Trump said he expected an eventual "very positive result" with North Korea but dampened expectations for a breakthrough in Singapore.

The ongoing negotiations give US officials the opportunity to rebalance any future summit agenda to include not only the security threat that North Korea poses to the United States and our allies in Southeast Asia, but also the regime's human rights record.

He says: "In light of how North Korea has behaved in the past, I believe that it is important not to reward North Korea exclusively for agreeing to have a dialogue".

The understanding among the U.S. officials is the letter is generally positive and a step in the right direction toward a meeting between Kim and Trump.

Pyongyang's envoy joined Pompeo at the apartment of a USA diplomat on Manhattan's East side for talks over an evening meal that lasted about an hour and a half.

"We will push forward to test the proposition that we can achieve that outcome", he said.

In his letter printed on White House stationery, Trump, in an uncharacteristically warm and congenial tone, said he was canceling the summit because of North Korea's harsh comments about USA officials.

Simultaneously, Kim met Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and, according to official news agency KCNA, said the North's "will for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula still remains unchanged and consistent and fixed". "If they get to be with us through the whole meeting, they will think, "Wow, the North-South high-level talks are producing a good outcome" and will vividly report what happens".

The letter appeared to be in response to a comment from Trump last Thursday when he canceled the summit, accusing Pyongyang of hostility, but urged the North Korean leader to "call me or write" if he had a change of heart. Each side, she said, will "try to add some steps to get advantage".

Kim's letter seemed to be a sign that the summit might now go ahead.

Kim Yong Chol was greeted at the White House by chief of staff John Kelly and then whisked into the Oval Office. The prospect of negotiations could undercut Trump's efforts to pressure China and other countries into withholding economic aid from North Korea unless it gives up its nuclear weapons. A pair of USA delegations have held talks this week with their North Korean counterparts at the Korean demilitarized zone and in Singapore.

Kim Yong-chol is a close aide of Kim Jong-un and is vice chairman of the ruling Workers Party's central committee.

Kim Yong Chol left his hotel in New York City early on Friday for the trip to Washington in a convoy of vehicles. -South Korea military drills and is also demanding the return of 12 North Korean restaurant workers who arrived in the South in 2016.

When asked about the potential Trump-Kim meeting, Ri replied: "Go fly to Singapore to ask that question".
