  • Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

The White House announced an early exit from the summit Thursday night after French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signalled they would use the G7 event to take a stance against new USA tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Top Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Trudeau "stabbed us in the back", suggesting that the Canadian leader's criticism of Trump's trade policies undermined the president before his summit meeting with North Korea.

"I don't want us to keep inflating our language", she added, saying the word "depressed" was "already a lot, coming from me", in an ironic reference to her usual unflappable appearance.

Asked why she allowed Trump to run rings around her, Merkel pointed to the EU's retaliatory tariffs and said, "We don't let ourselves be taken advantage of again and again".

'The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president, ' Trudeau's office said in a statement released on Twitter, which added Trudeau remained focused on what was accomplished at the two-day summit in Quebec.

"On the issue of [tariffs and trade deficits] alone, we have allies strategically, but when it comes to trade disputes, these allies are basically robbing us blind", he said.

But despite the rows over trade and Russia, Mr Trump rated his relationship with other G7 leaders as 10 out of 10.

On CNN's "State of the Union", Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the White House was angered by Trudeau's comments during the news conference that Canada would stand up for itself and that recently imposed US tariffs on steel and aluminum are "insulting".

The U.S. president arrived several minutes after the start of the breakfast meeting between G7 leaders and the gender equality advisory council that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created for this year's summit in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. "I don't think that ratcheting up the rhetoric is going to improve things".

In response, the European Union is preparing new tariffs set to hit United States exports ranging from jeans to bourbon whiskey.

During a rare solo news conference earlier Saturday, Trump said he pressed for the G7 countries to eliminate all tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies in their trading practices.

Trump, who attended the day one of the summit pitched the idea of discarding all tariffs and trade barriers between the U.S. and its G-7 allies. He says "we're not looking to play games". The EU also won't be "taken for a ride" in its trade conflict with the U.S., she said.

Navarro calls that a "socialist communique" that Trump pulled out of.

The US has slapped a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.

Russian Federation was pushed out of what was then the G8 after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", he said.
