  • Somalia is the easternmost point in the Horn of Africa

A US Department of Defense (DoD) representative confirmed to AFP that one American soldier was killed and four were wounded.

A USA special operations forces soldier was killed and four were wounded on Friday in a gun battle against likely al-Shabaab militants in Somalia, said a us official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"We attacked a military base killed one USA soldier, two Kenyan soldiers and nine Somali soldiers from Jubbaland state".

A USA military official confirmed the attack in the country's south, about 50 kilometers (32 miles) north of the port city of Kismayo, killed one US troop and wounded four others.

Four others were wounded as well during an ambush attack conducted by the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab in the southwestern part of the country.

Africom's statement did not specify how many enemies or which organization carried out the attack, but reports say the al Qaeda-affiliated al Shabaab is suspected.

US President Donald Trump offered his condolences via Twitter. Three of the wounded US service members and the one local fighter who was wounded in the attack were medically evacuated, the Pentagon said.

The U.S. had pulled out of the Horn of Africa nation after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets. Al-Shabab has been blamed for the October truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed more than 500 people. It was pushed out of Mogadishu in recent years but continues to control rural areas in the south and central regions.

Late a year ago US drone strikes also began targeting a small presence of fighters linked to the Islamic State group in Somalia's north.

Names of the soldiers have not been released while the USA notifies next of kin. Since 2007, Al-Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

The role of United States troops during the operation was to provide aerial surveillance and to provide other assistance to the coalition group.

us military operations in Africa have come under greater scrutiny since an October 4 ambush by Islamic State militants in the West African country of Niger left four USA soldiers dead.

This is the second USA military member to be killed in Somalia since the 1993 Black Hawk down incident that resulted in the deaths of 18 American soldiers.
