  • The Saudi Arabia national team arriving in Rostov on Don for their FIFA World Cup 2018 match

Luis Suarez made history for Uruguay as he inspired his country to a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their World Cup Group A clash.

Russia's 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday means both they and Uruguay have collected maximum points from their two Group A games.

Uruguay now need to beat Russian Federation in Samara next Monday to top the group, while Saudi Arabia will head home following their final Group A game against Egypt. The team has now been eliminated from group stages in their four consecutive appearances in World Cup finals since their best in their debut in 1994 when Saudi Arabia had reached the last 16.

Winning coach Oscar Tabarez said he felt Saudi Arabia had played better than his Uruguay side, and Pizzi believed his team's gutsy display would have lifted the spirits of their supporters at home.

Suarez scored the winning goal in his 100th global appearance for Uruguay, knocking in a corner kick from Carlos Sanchez in the 23rd minute to give the two-time champions a 1-0 victory over the Saudis on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time).

On his 100th worldwide cap, the Barcelona striker tapped home the winning goal from close range in the 23rd minute - his first of the tournament.

Luis Suarez won his 100th cap for Uruguay, starting up front with Edinson Cavani. "I hope we win our next match", he said.

"We had a lot of the ball and moved it well and we are able to do what we aimed to do, but we conceded a goal in a moment of misfortune and then we didn't have the tools to equalize, even though we didn't really suffer in defense".

Saudi Arabia also had to play most of the match without trusted midfielder Taisser Aljassam, who limped off before halftime with an injury after lunging forward for a challenge.

In 2026 in North America, the first 48-team World Cup, there will be potentially more Arab teams than ever before.

The La Celeste boss highlighted a key point that many people seem to have forgotten - There are no easy games during a World Cup.

Midfielders: Nahitan Nandez, Lucas Torreira, Matias Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur, Carlos Sanchez, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Cristian Rodriguez, Gaston Ramirez.

Saudi Arabia were nowhere in the game despite having a ball possession of 57 per cent for they lacked the capability to crack through Uruguay's defence.
