USA teens leaving Facebook for YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat

  • Teens are over Facebook

A survey from Pew Research Centre finds 51 per cent of teens (ages 13-17) still use Facebook, a sharp drop from the 71 per cent of teens who said they used the social network three years ago.

That's a significant drop from 2015, the previous year Pew published a similar study, when Facebook was the most popular social platform among USA teens.

As for which of the social media services the teen survey participants used the most, Snapchat came in highest with 35 percent identifying it as their most frequent choice, while YouTube followed at 32 percent, and Instagram at 15 percent.

The survey found that 85 percent of teens use YouTube, 72 percent use Instagram and 69 percent use Snapchat. For example, lower-income teens are more likely to use Facebook, the report said.

33% of male teens used Youtube more than females (16%), while females used Snapchat and Instagram more heavily than their male counterparts.

Though this seems like grim news for Facebook, it's important to remember the company still owns Instagram, VentureBeat reported. Just seven percent said that they use the popular social news aggregation site Reddit. The Pew analysis was based on a survey of 1,058 parents who have a teenager between 13 and 17, as well as interviews with 743 teens themselves. Seven-in-ten teenagers living in households earning less than $30,000 a year say they use Facebook, compared with 36 per cent whose annual family income is $75,000 or more, the results showed.

Furthermore, 84 percent of teens have access to a game console and 90 percent say they play games of any kind.

When it comes to the platform they access most frequently throughout the day, Snapchat is king. About 45% believe social media has neither a positive nor a negative effect on people their age. Another 44 percent report going online several times a day, while 11 percent say they use it even less often than that.

Pew also says 95 per cent of teens now have a smartphone or access to one, up from 73 per cent during the prior survey. The margin of error is 5 percentage points.

Ease of connectivity and interaction with others are the chief positives when teens describe in their own words what they gain from social media.
