A Samsung Messaging Bug Might Be Texting Random Contacts Your Private Photos

The other option is to switch to a different texting app like Android Messages or Textra, which don't seem effected by whatever is plaguing Samsung's texting app (so far).

Specifically, the photos were sent over Samsung's stock text messaging app. The Samsung Messages app doesn't show any sign of sending the photos, meaning the user is completely unaware of the picture messaging. One user has even claimed that Samsung Messages sent all of the photos in their gallery to one contact late at night for no apparent reason.

Another Reddit user summed things up quite nicely: "Give me a spontaneously exploding phone any day of the week, Samsung, instead of this nightmare scenario".

'However, there was record of it on TMobile logs.

Affected users are encouraged to contact Samsung directly until a fix is issued. Samsung is now investigating reports from users who say their devices have recently begun doing this.

They added that they had enabled a setting allowing pictures to be automatically backed-up to Google, and suspected that the leak occurred because of an update to the Samsung Messages app.

The comments triggered hysteria on Reddit, with others concerned their own photos could be sent to a contact in their phones at random.

Samsung tells Gizmodo they are aware of the reports and are looking into them, but has yet to come out with an official statement warning users of the bug. Since several accounts said photos had been randomly sent to partners or family members, there is also speculation that the problem affects shared plans. The working theory is that this error is something to do with the RCS profile updates that have been rolling out on U.S. carriers.

There's a theory on Samsung's forums that this bug has something to do with the recent Rich Communication Services updates that carriers have been rolling out in the United States.

In the meantime, Samsung established a question and answer page to address the glitch.
