Alexander Gerst, a German astronaut now aboard the ISS, helped design CIMON's screen prompts and vocal controls. The Crew Interactive Mobile CompanioN (CIMON) is designed to help astronauts with their jobs and to create a feeling of talking to a crew mate, and playing with a Rubik cube.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket with its Dragon capsule (which will deliver the goods to the ISS) launched at 5:42 a.m. ET amid good weather conditions and with no technical difficulties.

The spacecraft is taking around 2,600 kilograms of supplies to the global space station; these include an AI robot named Cimon, cellular biology equipment for cancer therapy, a chemical garden, and other earth science objects. No, these were not caused by aliens or UFOs, but by a Falcon 9 rocket that had blasted off from Cape Canaveral at 5:42 a.m.

NASA's commentator said, "We have ignition and liftoff!" The capsule is scheduled to reach the station on July 2.

Cimon's human handlers promised the first AI space bot will behave itself and said there would be no mutinous takeovers like HAL from the 1968 film classic 2001: A Space Odyssey'.

CIMON will verbally communicate step-by-step instructions to Mr. Gerst during three planned science experiments on the space station's European module.

To get Cimon's attention, Gerst will need only to call its name.

Manfred Jaumann, the head of microgravity payloads at Airbus, described CIMON as "a kind of flying brain". "It understands Alexander", said Bret Greenstein, global vice president of Watson Internet of Things Offerings at IBM.

Airbus says with CIMON, crew members can do more than just work through a schematic view of prescribed checklists and procedures; they can also engage with their assistant. Cimon is programmed to relate to astronauts.

Other experiments on board the Dragon include a new robotic hand, or latching end effector, for the space station's Canadian-made robotic arm.

On Friday, the spacecraft was carrying 5,900 pounds of research equipment, cargo and supplies to support hundreds of investigations now happening aboard the International Space Station's laboratory.
