  • Pres. Trump: 'Very Close' To Making Final Supreme Court Pick

Democrats girded for a fight as Trump kept up the suspense surrounding his shortlist of four possibles, all with solid right-wing credentials, ahead of the televised announcement to be made in prime time from the White House. He called Kavanaugh a "brilliant jurist" who has "devoted his life to public service".

This is Mr Trump's second appointment to the highest court in the land, potentially allowing him to shape the United States for a generation after he leaves office.

Prior to his time as a judge he oversaw an investigation into the death of a deputy counsel for President Bill Clinton. Before that, Kavanaugh served for more than five years in the Bush White House from July 2003 until May 2006. During the delay, he worked as Bush's staff secretary. But it's likely that supporters of abortion rights are still wondering about this issue. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME were widely identified as the two lawmakers most likely to break with their party, given both their support of abortion rights, and the view that Kennedy's replacement had potential to be more conservative than he was in this regard. He then introduced Kavanaugh, who shook hands with Trump before standing with his wife and two daughters.

The process is arduous, with the private meetings giving way to days of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

Kavanaugh told the president as he took the microphone to accept his nomination that he was "grateful to you" and "humbled by your confidence in me".

"I'm open to voting yes".

Presidents weigh all sorts of considerations in deciding on a Supreme Court nominee, often beginning with the big question: Will the choice be confirmed by the Senate?

What is nearly certain - and those across the political spectrum agree - is that Kavanaugh's selection will spark a major confirmation battle in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority and opposition Democrats say they will fight to prevent the high court from swinging further to the right. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee.

All of the candidates are relatively young and could help shape legal doctrine on the high court for decades to come. Those included a number of high-profile cases, including same-sex marriage and upholding a woman's right to an abortion.

"She's really outstanding", Hatch said.

Kavanaugh once served as a Supreme Court clerk under Kennedy.

Trump's nom was unveiled in the White House's East Room, picking from his short list provided by right-wing Federalist Society. The New York Times is also reporting that Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell is pushing for either Hardiman or Raymond Kethledge, another option. They point to narrow aspects of an opinion he wrote on the Affordable Care Act, for example.

Leo said Hardiman of Pennsylvania and Kethledge of MI are "a little bit less known by conservatives". With mere hours left to go before his self-imposed deadline, Trump, who had been consulting with family, friends and advisers this past weekend while in Bedminster, New Jersey, had not made a final decision. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the second justice installed by Trump, who nominated Neil Gorsuch to the court shortly after being inaugurated past year.

Like the other eight justices on the court, Kavanaugh has an Ivy League law degree, spending his undergraduate and law school years at Yale.

All of the candidates were on a list of 25 names released by the president in November.
