A man has been charged with hate crimes after he was seen in a video verbally harassing a woman for wearing a shirt with the flag of Puerto Rico. People on Twitter called the officer "worthless" and noted that Puerto Rico is a United States commonwealth and its people American citizens.
After a few minutes of asking the man to leave her alone, the video shows the woman asking a Cook County Forest Preserves officer for help.
You're "not going to change us", the harasser told the woman - though it wasn't clear exactly whom he meant by "us". On video, you can hear her saying, "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing".
The man again approaches Irizarry in a threatening manner while she begs him to stay away. The world is not going to change the United States of America. "You should not be wearing that", he is heard saying as he repeatedly confronts her.
In the video, Trybus, 62, demands to know why the woman is wearing a shirt displaying the Puerto Rican flag. "Officer, I feel entirely uncomfortable, can you remove. please officer".
"'Is she an American citizen?" he then asks the officer.
The agency adds, "The intoxicated individual involved in the incident was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct".
Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossellotweeted several times Monday night about the video, calling the incident "undignified".

A 62-year-old man appears to be in need of geography lessons after he allegedly accosted a woman for wearing a T-shirt with an image of the Puerto Rican flag in an IL park.
"The officer should have stepped in and he should have done something", Pope said. "I am appalled, shocked & disturbed by the officer's behavior", he said.
Cummings said another union attorney who is representing Connor has not had a full sit-down interview with him yet, and neither has the Forest Preserve District Police Department. From 1917, Puerto Rican residents have been US citizens and have the ability to vote in USA presidential primaries, though not in presidential elections. "In this case, a USA citizen questions the citizenship of another United States citizen and American law-enforcement just sits back and watches". "Whether they are racists at a park, Cook County employees who do nothing, or Presidents who toss paper towels at people and denigrate Latinos w/ every Tweet, this is not the America we want to become & standing up to hate & bigotry must start at home".
"I am very sorry for the experience the young woman had to (endure) and I'm further troubled by the lack of response and action by the initial officer on the scene".
