Sweden's 3-0 win over Mexico in the group's other match meant the pair advanced on six points apiece.

GERMANY has been sensationally booted out of the World Cup before the knockout stage for the first time since 1938.

Germany suffered the first of several scares after South Korea won a free kick on the quarter hour when Sami Khedira's boot connected with the head of Jung Wooyoung.

"We all played hard for our fans back home and tried to make sure we'd have no regrets at the end". We had our chances and kept on playing all the time but it just didn't work.

In the last five World Cups, all those that have taken place in the 21st century including this year's, the holder has been eliminated in the group stage.

A defeat to Mexico set the tone for their campaign, and although they managed a dramatic last-gasp win over Sweden, their loss to South Korea proved costly.

He said: "Until quite recently, we have probably been the most consistent, in terms of performance, team in the past 10, 12 years". We are just as disappointed as you!

Germany became the next world champion, failed to defend the title. A mad scramble from the Germans saw Neuer charge up the pitch; unlike so many successful marauding manoeuvres from the shot-stopper, this one ended with a quick clearance towards the other goal.

"Since 2006 we've been among the last four or in the final".

"Teamwork has improved but with time we've also had injures, so it's not easy".

"We have to admit this is a defeat".

German defender Mats Hummels said the early exit was "really bitter" for his side.

The Asians, however, were also unsafe on the counter-attack and a couple of times carved opportunities to keep Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on his toes.

In the 92nd mintue, South Korea thought it had scored after a corner when Kim Young-Gwon put it in the back of the net, but he was originally ruled offside.

Despite a late onslaught, Germany could not find a breakthrough.

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min then piled on the embarrassment for the holders, scoring a late second after Manuel Neuer was caught way out of his goal.

"This is something for us to reckon with", Low said after the final whistle. We had that today, too.
