F1: Mercedes British GP practice Verstappen brought to a halt

  • Max Verstappen wins Austrian F1 as Mercedes ruins Lewis Hamilton's day, Sebastian Vettel takes title lead

"I don't know what makes Lewis tick, but it seems a fairly freakish thing for somebody to feel they need to throw themselves under the bus to motivate a driver to go from fourth back into the lead", he said, per the Daily Mail.

Mercedes have come under fire after they admitted to making a tactical mistake which scuppered Lewis Hamilton's Austrian GP charge last weekend. "Not many drivers get to do that".

"The track is the fastest it has ever been; we're flat out through Copse and Turn 1 and through Turn 2 with the DRS - it's insane how fast it is", he said.

"I remember yesterday, when we did the brief, I was like, "Ron, you should tell Charlie, someone's going to crash".

Hamilton will have already turned his attention to the British GP in Silverstone - a race he was won four times consecutively since 2014 - so expect a resurgent Mercedes.

It was also Verstappen's fourth career victory as he came home 1.504 seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who regained the lead in the drivers championship ahead of Hamilton by a single point. We think that both failures were confined to the items which failed and they are both things which can be replaced without breaking into the sealed areas of the vehicle which attract sporting penalties.

"Austria was a hard weekend, we all wished it wasn't the way it was, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". Obviously for me, it sucked on the day, it will probably suck for somebody else at a point in the season, but I just think that all these things are unnecessary. At this point, the virtual safety vehicle was deployed. 'We all wished it wasn't the way it was, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

"With the speeds we're going now and the G forces we're pulling, I think it's going to be the most physical race of the year".

The Melbourne race has been held on the penultimate weekend of March for the last two years but has been moved forward, to give the event space either side of the Moomba Festival and the start of the Australia Football League season.

"The team was super on it and I'm confident we've done everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again", said Hamilton. Räikkönen was third with 101 points, Daniel Ricciardo with 96, and Verstappen with 93 points.

"Probably more like somewhere in-between, but I don't want to get into predictions".

"I do really feel like I have the best strategy team behind me".

"It would be great to take the lead back from Seb here, but I am really grateful to be in a position to fight for a win at Silverstone for a sixth time".
