  • Arsenal's French striker Olivier Giroud stretches to try to reach the ball as Chelsea's Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Chelsea's Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic

Vermaelen has started just one of Belgium's five World Cup matches so far after only recovering from a hamstring injury just in time to travel to Russian Federation with Roberto Martinez's squad.

France look to return to the final of the World Cup for the first time since 2006, while the Belgians look to confirm the promise of their "golden generation" and reach the final for the first time, reports Xinhua news agency.

Giroud and Courtois will come face-to-face in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup on Tuesday night, with France taking on Belgium for a spot in next weekend's final. A living legend of French football, Henry was one of the stars during their 1998 World Cup win.

He was the Premier League and EFL Cup winners' outstanding player last season and, alongside club captain Vincent Kompany, the 27-year-old believes some of the lessons learned under the Catalan tactician are serving to benefit Belgium. For comparison Belgium has scored 14, England has scored 11 and Croatia have scored 10. They keep that particular quality, but against Brazil, Martinez intensified the midfield. and the Brazilians couldn't use those corridors.

"It is good to see that with such a young team France is progressing well".

"I feel very proud for my group".

"Nobody is out, even though we rested four players today".

Eden Hazard was a lively presence on Belgium's right, dragging a shot wide and Toby Alderweireld forced a smart save from Hugo Lloris while at the other end Olivier Giroud flicked a header narrowly wide. "We will go into this final to win it, as we have still not gotten over the (2016) final".

Fellow pundit Alan Shearer felt that while players such as Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann give Didier Deschamps" team something special, victory over Belgium also showed the French are "streetwise'.

Just like players are free to choose which country or club they want to play for provided they abide by the law, similarly former players can not be judged by which country they decide to coach.
