IPhone SE, iPhone 6s suffer fast battery drain on iOS 11.4

  • How to use USB Restricted Mode on your iPhone or iPad

That time allowance may be convenient, but the flip side is someone might be able to access data on the iPhone within the hour.

Back when Apple first revealed that it would be implementing USB Restricted Mode in iOS, the company caught some backlash from United States authorities. Once an iPhone has been locked, a countdown begins before USB Restricted Mode activates.

Not only does it require law enforcement to act quickly and to have the requisite hardware on hand, but it only works within the window: once USB Restricted Mode has kicked in, you can't undo it without the passcode.

The accompanying explanation gives no indication of its real goal: "Unlock iPhone to allow USB accessories to connect when it has been more than hour since your iPhone was locked", it says underneath a sliding bar. Apple says that it added USB Restricted Mode to iOS to increase device security against a known means of hacking, which notably has been used by law enforcement personnel to extract the contents of criminal suspects' phones without their permission.

According to researchers at ElcomSoft, if a USB accessory is plugged into the phone before the one-hour time limit has elapsed, it will reset the counter.

The hacks work by connecting through to your iPhone's Lightning port over USB, the same way that you'd plug in your iPhone to backup using iTunes, but there are passcode cracking tools that abuse this port to hack your iPhone.

However, if you aren't actually happy with the release, and you want to go back to an earlier version of iOS, then be aware that Apple is now only signing iOS 11.4, which means that you will only be able to downgrade to iOS 11.4. All iOS 11.4, 11.4.1 and iOS 12 users are recommended to downgrade to 11.4 beta 3 for jailbreak! Additionally, if the Lightning accessory doesn't include a pass-through power port, there's no way to keep the device fueled during transport. Many Lightning accessories, however, don't have the capability to do that, so the iPhone just trusts them by default.

This seems like an oversight on Apple's part, and it's possible the company will fix this in a future update. "Your accessory then remains connected, even if your device is subsequently locked". This is the fifteenth update since iOS 11 released last September. After all, if you're listening to music with your iPhone hooked up to a USB audio interface, you don't want the music to stop after an hour, and to re-authenticate before you can continue.

A really interesting tidbit from the ElcomSoft report is that since iOS 11.4, Grayshift's boxes are already weakened significantly. Apple doesn't see it as a flaw.
