How do you sum up Kevin Anderson and John Isner's Wimbledon semi-final?

After being kept waiting until past 8 p.m.to start their semi-final, the duo ran out of time to finish it before the 11 p.m. curfew and will have to return on Saturday to complete the match with Djokovic leading by two sets to one.

Finally, however, Anderson's grit, athleticism and stamina - and one brilliant bout of ambidextrousness - paid off, and he clinched the match after playing the equivalent of nine sets in total, to win 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 26-24.

There, they face the victor of the match between Alicja Rosolska and Abigail Spears and the third-seeded Czech pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

But world No.1 broke twice in the second set and fended off more break points to level the match.

But his record in fifth sets slumped to 9-18 overall, including defeats of 19-17, 18-16, 12-10 and now 26-24. Both Isner and Anderson said they'd like to see that change. "My left heel is killing me".

"So, I apologise if I'm not more excited right now.so many mixed emotions in getting through something like that".

The previous longest semifinal match at Wimbledon was in 2013, when Djokovic beat Juan Martín del Potro in 4 hours, 44 minutes.

"I really hope we can look at it and address this, because at the end, you don't even feel that great out there". The US Open is the lone major that has a tiebreak in the deciding set.

"It's long overdue", said Isner, who suggested changing the rule to using a tiebreaker at 12-all in the fifth set. The 2012 Olympian played the longest match in Wimbledon history in 2010. They dominated in the past year and a half and I think they have many other titles ahead.

Anderson, who was runner-up to Nadal in last year's US Open final, becomes the first South African man to reach the Wimbledon decider since Brian Norton in 1921.

For Isner, who has come off second best in five-set marathons for the fourth successive year at Wimbledon, things simply can not go on like this any more. The victor of the match will face off against the victor of John Isner and Kevin Anderson. Anderson served for the third at 5-3, got broken, and then had a pair of set points in that tiebreaker, double-faulting one away.

Anderson's fifth set alone lasted almost 3 hours as his semifinal became a test of endurance more than skill.

Anderson had nearly surely forced the game back to deuce with a close-range dink over the net, but a exhausted Isner somehow stormed across the court to slam home a passing victor.

Both players held serve all the way through the third set and into the tiebreaker, which saw Nadal fail to convert three separate set-point opportunities, including one on his own serve.

The American's response was immediate, breaking straight back in the next game as Anderson served for a two sets to love lead at 5-3.

That point ended up actually setting up the winning break for Anderson. He has reached a career-high in the rankings and on Wednesday he defeated Canadian Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, advancing the furthest he ever has in a Grand Slam tournament.

Back and fully healthy, Djokovic and Nadal should give us a match to see. However, it was still only half as long as the absurd contest between Isner and Mahut.

Meanwhile, Anderson didn't face a break point in the fifth set.
