  • Jordan to hold talks with Russia over Syria's Deraa province

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told reporters on Monday after a meeting with United Nations officials that shipments of aid were waiting to get approvals to enter into Syria from the Jordanian border.

Safadi made the comment after holding talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

"Russia has also repeatedly noted the need to remove all unilateral sanctions imposed by the Western countries against the Syrian Arab Republic, sanctions that prevent from ensuring normal economic, infrastructure conditions for return of refugees", the top Russian diplomat added.

In this context, Chairman of Jordan's Senate Faisal al-Fayez called on the global community to shoulder its moral and humanitarian responsibilities towards ending the suffering of the Syrian people as a result of the crisis they been enduring since 2011.

Russia, which backs a Syrian government offensive, held talks last week with rebel forces who said they rejected a "humiliating" surrender deal.

"Hundreds of thousands" of people fleeing the violence have converged on the Jordan-Syria border, Throssell said, going on to urge countries of the region to open their borders to refugees.

At least 330,000 people have recently fled Syria's southwestern city of Daraa to areas near the Jordanian border due to fierce attacks by Syrian regime forces, the United Nations said Tuesday.

Some 650,000 Syrian refugees are currently registered with the UNHCR in Jordan, but the government estimates that more than double that number are in the country, and the kingdom now insists it can not take any more.

In addition for a ceasefire, the rebels are negotiating for the regime to withdraw from towns it has already captured, and safe passage of opposition forces to other rebel-held territory for those fighters and civilians who don't wish to live under regime control.

The air strikes targeted the towns of Tafas, northwest of the provincial capital Deraa, and Saida, to its east, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Talks leading up to the agreement - which stipulates the opposition handing over heavy weaponry to the government - were mediated by neighbouring Jordan.

Southwest Syria is a "de-escalation zone" of reduced warfare and bombardment agreed by Russia, Jordan and the United States past year.

It was their last day to consider the terms, the spokesman for the rebels' southern operations said, before meeting the Russian delegation on Wednesday afternoon.

This comes as several towns have accepted to embark on a reconciliation process with the Syrian army in Daraa, while other towns have been retaken through military action. But the current crisis is likely to result in a far larger number of refugees approaching the Israeli border, Lesch says.
