The Justice Department has announced charges against 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking offenses during the 2016 presidential election.

A copy of the grand jury indictment against 12 Russian intelligence officers is seen after the indictments were filed in U.S. District Court by prosecutors working as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigationÊin Washington, U.S., July 13, 2018.

The US has indicted 12 Russian military officers for hacking the Democratic National Committee and other targets and leaking the stolen materials during the 2016 presidential election.

CBS News' Paula Reid has details of the charges - and the reaction. Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said on Twitter that it was time to end the Mueller investigation since "no Americans are involved".

"Today's charges include no allegations of knowing involvement by anyone on the campaign and no allegations that the alleged hacking affected the election result".

"The indictments Rod Rosenstein announced are good news for all Americans".

Trump, who is now visiting Britain, is scheduled to meet with Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has urged the president to cancel that meeting, in light of the indictment.

"These indictments are further proof of what everyone but the president seems to understand: President Putin is an adversary who interfered in our elections to help President Trump win", Schumer said in a statement.

After a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, Mr. Trump said he would address election meddling with Putin.

Trump has repeatedly called the investigation a "hoax" and a "witch hunt." despite multiple indictments and guilty pleas.

"We have been extremely tough on Russia", Trump said.

The attempt to penetrate Clinton's campaign began March 10, 2016, and hit a significant success on March 19 when the Russian intelligence officers busted open the email account of John Podesta, Clinton's campaign chairman, an AP investigation a year ago found.

United States intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation, in an effort ordered by Putin, used propaganda and hacking to meddle in the election in an effort to harm Clinton and eventually help Trump.

Rosenstein said 11 of the Russians indicted Friday were charged with "conspiring to hack into computers, steal documents, and release those documents with the intent to interfere in the election".

One of the Russians probed election websites in Iowa, Florida and Georgia, looking for vulnerabilities just days before the November election, the indictment charged.

"The defendants accessed email accounts of volunteers and employees of a USA presidential campaign, including the campaign chairman starting in March of 2016", the deputy attorney general said. It accuses them of covertly monitoring the computers of dozens of Democratic officials and volunteers, implanting malicious computer code known as malware and using phishing emails to gain control of the accounts of people associated with the Clinton campaign.
