President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected a request to lower American flags in honor of the five people killed last week in a mass shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mr Buckley, elected Annapolis mayor a year ago, submitted the flag request to the White House over the weekend and said he was disappointed it was not initially approved.

The president also issued a proclamation honoring the slain newspaper employees and ordering the flags to be lowered.

Tronc CEO and Chairman Justin Dearborn, said the victims would forever be remembered as "outstanding people and journalists who we will continue to honor". And below the main shooting story were the staples of a community newspaper: a glance at the day's weather and a teaser to a national story inside: "Trump, Putin: The two leaders will meet in Finland in July".

The proclamation orders flags at the White House and other federal buildings and ships to be lowered until sunset Tuesday.

Hundreds of people gathered on Friday evening to remember the five people gunned down at a community newspaper office in Annapolis, Maryland, one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in U.S. history. Police say they are a questioning the suspect, a white man in his late 30s, following Thursday's attack on The Capital Gazette in Annapolis.

Marquardt said he once slept with a baseball bat by his bed because he was so anxious about Ramos.

"The words of appreciation for our work and its importance to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County is a balm to our wounds", the editorial continued.

Rob Hiaasen, Wendi Winters, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara and Rebecca Smith were killed Thursday in the shooting.

The Baltimore Sun Media Group will be observing a moment of silence for the five employees of the Capital Gazette who were killed last week in a shooting at the paper's Annapolis office. The Sun was told about the letter by Thomas Marquardt, the Capital's former publisher.

The alleged shooter, 38-year-old Jarrod Warren Ramos, has been held without bail for five counts of first-degree murder following a Friday hearing.

Perth-raised Mr Buckley said on Monday his initial request to the White House had been declined. Trump has ordered flags be lowered after other mass shootings. I told you so.

"At this point in time, it would start to polarize people and I don't want to make people angry", he said.

Some have also pointed out that President Obama also faced criticism in 2015 for failing to quickly issue a proclamation that the flag be flown at half-staff for five US service members who were killed by a gunman at a naval reserve center in Chattanooga, Tenn.
