Montreal health officials are blaming the heavy heat and humidity for at least six deaths in recent days.

Authorities say 11 people have died due to a spike in temperatures that began in Montreal on Saturday.

He says the last extended heat wave that baked the area was about seven years ago.

Environment Canada advises that extreme heat affects everyone.

In the Eastern Townships region southeast of Montreal, four deaths are under investigation to determine if they are related to the extreme heat.

"The record temperatures are expected to continue in central and eastern Canada, so make sure you know how to protect yourself and your family", Trudeau said.

In Ontario, a spokeswoman for the coroner's office said it couldn't confirm if there were any heat-related deaths, adding it could take weeks or several months to complete such probes. Daytime high temperatures near 30 degrees are forecast, with humidex values in the mid to high thirties.

Slightly cooler conditions will likely arrive late Sunday as a cold front is expected to move through the region.

In response to the extended heat warning, the city has opened a number of cooling centres around Toronto.

A fifth fatality may also have been caused by the heat, they said. Toronto is also providing transit tokens for people experiencing homelessness to get to cool places. Friday is forecast to be 28 C with a 40 per cent chance of showers. However, the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Even those not specifically at risk are encouraged to stay inside or in the shade, and to limit outdoor activity in the heat.
