Boris Johnson, the former British foreign secretary, was accused of "pandering to the far right" on Monday after comparing women who wear the niqab to bank robbers and letter boxes even as the Conservative Party faced fresh calls to investigate Islamophobia in its ranks.

Ms Davidson said: "This wasn't an off-the-cuff slip, he wrote a column, he knew exactly what he was doing and I think it crossed from being provocative and starting a debate and actually it became rude and gratuitous".

The Conservative Party's chairman, Brandon Lewis, has called on Mr Johnson to apologise for the comments.

In the first instance, Johnson - a leading figure of in the campaign to Leave the European Union - will be scrutinised by a party investigator.

The Conservative party code of practice sets out "minimum standards of behaviour." .

Ms Faifi, who wears niqab, a veil which leaves the eyes uncovered, said she could "empathise" with people who find it hard to connect with women whose full faces they cannot see.

Johnson, who quit the government last month in a dispute over Brexit, wrote in the Daily Telegraph this week that it was "absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes".

We are happy to speak to Members of Parliament to share our experiences and perhaps demystify some of the concerns they may have.

Sahar al-Faifi, who has covered her face since she was 14, said that negative rhetoric is making Muslim women feel "unsafe".

The BBC News interview, broadcast on a television in the waiting area, featured a Muslim woman in a niqab. "It's very clear that the language Boris Johnson used to describe people's appearance, has caused offence".

And an imam who has previously criticised the burka said Mr Johnson should not "apologise for telling the truth".

"We have to call it out".

"With everything else going on in London to be diverting resources into an even cursory investigation into an article is weird", Mr Burns said according to The Telegraph.

"We must not fall into the trap of shutting down the debate on hard issues", a source close to Johnson told reporters.

"As an organisation championing the rights of Muslim women, we are all too familiar with the ways in which this "natural reaction" manifests itself: a woman who was attacked, punched and had her headscarf ripped off, and another who had a bottle smashed over her head in a bus, both in Glasgow this year".
