  • China rejects US demand to reduce Iran oil imports: report

While South Korea has halted imports from Iran and reports in India indicate it may also bow to the U.S. campaign, Washington's entreaties to Beijing have proved fruitless, two unnamed officials told Bloomberg.

Beijing has, however, agreed not to ramp up purchases of Iranian crude, according to the officials, who asked not to be identified because discussions with China and other countries continue.

But US President Donald Trump made a decision to reimpose punishing sanctions against Iran, whom he has accused of posing a security threat.

In return, United Nations-approved sanctions were lifted, and Iran was allowed to resume trading oil and gas on the worldwide market. "It shows they have not thought about its consequences", Rouhani was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA while on an official visit to Austria's capital, Vienna, in July.

China - the world's top crude buyer and Iran's No. 1 customer - has said previously that it opposed unilateral sanctions and lifted monthly oil imports from the country by 26 percent in July.

USA officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the drills appeared created to send a message to Washington, which is intensifying its economic and diplomatic pressure on Tehran but so far stopping short of using the US military to more aggressively counter Iran and its proxies.

Rouhani's apparent threat earlier in July to disrupt oil shipments from neighboring countries came in reaction to the looming us sanctions and efforts by Washington to force all countries to stop buying Iranian oil.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned the U.S. against any attempt to stop Tehran's oil trade, threatening to block the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

They said they remained committed to the 2015 accord and to building up economic relations with Iran, including "the continuation of Iran's export of oil and gas" and other energy products.

Chinese and Indian companies "will be subject to the same sanctions that everybody else's are if they engage in those sectors of the economy that are sanctionable", a State Department official told reporters in June. "China will continue to cooperate with Iran adhering to its worldwide obligations", she added.

This time past year, Indian refiners had slashed imports from Iran in a possible retaliation for Tehran not awarding the development of a gas field in Iran to Indian firms.

Between April and July India's oil imports from Iran has risen by an annual 40% to about 677 500 bpd, the data showed. This accounted for 35 percent of Iranian exports last month, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.
