Gaza militants fired rockets into Israel and the Israeli military responded with air strikes on Wednesday despite talk from both sides of progress toward a possible truce to avert a fourth war in a decade.

The Gaza Health Ministry claimed that a pregnant 23-year-old Palestinian woman and her young daughter were killed in the Israeli reprisals.

Incoming rocket sirens continued to wail throughout southern Israel, including the city of Ashkelon, as projectiles continued to be launched from the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Israeli jets and tanks continued to pound the coastal enclave.

Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations envoy for the Middle East conflict who has been seeking to negotiate a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas, said he was "deeply alarmed" and called on all sides to "step back from the brink". "The "Iron Dome" aerial defence system intercepted 11 launches, the majority of the rockets hit open areas", the IAF said on its Twitter account.

Hamas warned Israel - with which it has fought three wars since 2008 - it would pay for the attack.

The Gaza Health Ministry said that a Hamas fighter and the two civilians were killed in separate incidents.

Israel condemned the BBC for its skewed reporting on the escalation between Hamas and the IDF and demanded that it change its biased headline.

A Hamas official told the Turkish news agency Anadolu on Tuesday that the two sides were expected to sign an agreement by late August that would reportedly lift restrictions on the entry of goods into the Gaza Strip in exchange for a five-year cease-fire and the return of the Israeli captives. He said Hamas is demanding the complete lifting of the Israeli-Egyptian blockade, while Israel has offered only to ease the restrictions. A volley launched against the city of Sderot caused injuries to three Israelis.

The escalation comes after the Hamas leadership convened for a rare meeting in Gaza on Friday.

Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom said three Israelis, including two men ages 34 and 20, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

"Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman reassured the mayor of Sderot and the heads of the regional councils in the vicinity of the Gaza border that "we will do what needs to be done" to restore calm to region".

They were killed in an airstrike in Jafarawi in central Gaza, the ministry said, while her husband was injured.

The IDF Spokesperson's unit announced that Israel struck several underground targets belonging to Hamas following continued rocket fire towards southern Israel. "If the current escalation is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

The statistics showed that 155 Palestinians were shot and killed, while 17,259 suffered from various injuries, including tear-gas suffocation.

The gathering had raised hopes a deal for a lasting truce with Israel, with the backing of Egypt and the United Nations.

Israel says it is defending its border and nearby communities and accuses Hamas of using the protests as cover for attempts to breach the fence and carry out attacks. Our strong commitment to the State of Israel's right to defend its borders and civilians is uncompromising.
